About The Hang Out (24 Hours)
Sleeping during the day and hanging out at night has become the preferred lifestyle for today’s youth. The research reveals that the number of the youth who hang around on the streets all night is increasing, and the term “young night drifters” is used to describe them. The Hang Out provides young people with a safe place to gather and hang out with their friends, and at the same time organizes leisure activities which encourage positive values. It also offers our social workers opportunities to understand the youth’s needs and help them with their personal, school, family and career developments. “Freedom-Needs to be offered; Opportunity-Needs to be given.”
Established in July 2002, the Hang Out was the first 24-hour drop-in center in Hong Kong. It offers the youth from age 6-24 a place to hang out and promotes positive values. Social workers are always ready to help the youngsters away from triads, as well as provide support for the All-Night Outreaching Teams. Moreover, the Hang Out implements Youth Employment Start-up Program aiming at equipping the youth with basic skills and making them more competitive in the job market.
Supporting the All-Night Outreaching Teams
The Hang Out provides support for All-Night Outreaching Teams, including offering facilities and counseling room (equipped with telephone, fax and computer), helping with case referral and taking care of the youth in a short term. We also provide them with parking spots for free.
